I miss Singapore!

Exactly a week ago, I returned from my 3-days-2-nights trip to Singapore. “Only two days? You should stay at least a week!” Friends and even my mum-in-law said to me. Two nights are definitely not enough to explore all the pleasures that Singapore has to offer. Unfortunately, I had to cut short my trip due to my studies, but I promise – I will visit Singapore again in the near future.

Flashback:- I flew from Miri to Singapore using Malaysian Airlines flight MH643, the plane transited in Kuching for 40 minutes. In my previous post, I talked a little about my journey from Miri to Kuching. At Kuching airport I had to come out of the plane and went through Immigration. I lingered for awhile at the shops before heading to the lavatory. Suddenly I heard my name being announced. That was the first time I heard my name being called while I was inside the toilet! After cleaning up, I rushed straight to the boarding gate and showed my boarding pass to the woman standing there. She was expecting me. “Oh, you already have a boarding pass,” she realized and then asked me to sit and wait along with other passengers. It wasn’t time yet to board the plane. I guess they thought I have yet to receive my pass, that’s why they announced my name? I’m not sure, but I’m glad it was nothing urgent or extraordinary. I already received two boarding passes at Miri airport earlier that morning, both had different seats.

For the journey from Kuching to Singapore, I got a window seat, to my delight. It wasn’t on the emergency lane though. My favorite seat is always the window seat next to the emergency exit. Anyway, on the same row where I was seated, there was a middle-aged lady already sitting on the aisle seat. She looked at me and then mumbled something to herself. Something about – she was thinking of changing her seat to the middle one, right next to me. I shrugged and didn’t mind at all. Besides, I prefer to sit next to a woman when I’m traveling alone. On the earlier flight I was ‘squeezed’ between two big men, it was quite uncomfortable. I hate middle seats, you know. Back to the story, a middle-aged man arrived at the row (I assumed he’s the woman’s husband) and she asked him to sit at the previous seat she occupied. Oh, OK… then I understood. She changed seats with her hubby; so she can sit between me and her husband.

I have this annoying thing called motion sickness. It’s also one of the reasons why I don’t travel that much, even though I have plenty of opportunities to do so. I tried to distract myself by watching an in-flight movie – ‘Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon’. AngelaBaby is really pretty; that was my first time watching her onscreen. The movie kept me amused and entertained during the flight. Then the food arrived. The ‘aunty‘ next to me accidentally spilled her orange juice on me! She apologized many times and wiped the liquid from my seat, my jeans, the side of my butt… I assured her, “It’s alright. Don’t worry.”

Was that my first time going to Singapore? I could say so, but in the past, I think my family had been there once – probably on transit or something. I don’t remember seeing any monument so it was probably just a transit. There were fragments of memories that kept coming back to me every now and then. Do you remember everything that happened to you when you were 4 or 5 years old? I don’t think I could recall all of them.

I was probably 5 years old that time. I only remembered that a stranger approached my mum and gave me an apple. Mum kept nudging me to say ‘Thank You’ to him but all I did was just stared at the tall stranger with dark sunglasses and long coat, my lips seemed to be frozen. Perhaps it was one of those days when I didn’t feel like talking. Then mum steered me away quickly to find my dad, she seemed a bit alarmed and scared. She doesn’t trust strangers much. Dad was at ticketing counter or something. Now I wonder, who was that stranger who gave me the apple? Given my age, he would probably be the same age as Gandalf if he’s still alive today. Ok, maybe not that old. I was exaggerating.

When I arrived at Changi airport, my husband was already waiting for me. We were staying in a hotel somewhere along Orchard Road. Two nights are definitely not enough to explore the wonders of Singapore. I managed to stroll along Orchard Road and did a little shopping; ate the delicious ramen at Ippudo; brunching at Antoinette; late-lunching at Paul’s; checked out the two casinos (Resort World and Marina Bay Sands) – prior to that I’d never been to any casino before in my entire life; rode on cable cars (I had to face my fear of heights!); played some activities at Skyline Luge; dropped by at Bikini Bar; strolled along Clarke Quay; dined at Quayside Seafood; rode on MRT (my first time actually) – got lost between the tunnels until a kind stranger who overheard our confused conversations pointed the right way for us. I took lots of pictures and videos while I was in Singapore. I felt very safe and happy there.

Overall, it was a fun trip. I was reluctant to leave.
