BJF2015 Tree Planting Ceremony on 7th May 2015 at Piasau Boat Club and Piasau Nature Reserve

Borneo Jazz Festival 2015 starts today! I hope to see you there tonight :)

This photo was taken just awhile ago …

The stage is just about ready!

The stage is just about ready!

I’m so excited!

… but this post is about what happened yesterday …

Yesterday (7th May 2015) we had a tree-planting event which took place at Piasau (the speeches were made in Piasau Boat Club while the tree-planting activities were done in Piasau Nature Reserve).

I have a lot of pictures to share with you but first and foremost I would like to give credits to the two photographers (Nad and Ghaz) appointed by Sarawak Tourism Board for this year’s Borneo Jazz festival. I’m going to post a lot of photos which were taken by them later.

The first two photos in this post were taken by Yours Truly; the rest were taken by Nad & Ghaz. The images, however, were re-sized by me.

How was the situation in the media room?

The tree planting ceremony ceremony was attended by approximately 150 participants which include the performers of Borneo Jazz, local agencies, volunteers from Universities, members of Malaysian Nature Society, Sarawak Shell Berhad, Sarawak Forestry Corporation, hoteliers, government officials and members of the media.

The VIP gracing the event was Assistant Minister for Sports and Communication – Yang Berhormat Datuk Lee Kim Shin. Also present were Miri Mayor Mr. Lawrence Lai, Resident of Miri Mr. Antonio Kahti Galis, ASP Arman Khan (representing Ketua Polis Daerah Miri), the General Manager of Sarawak Shell Berhad Mr. Chok Chee Tsong, and the Regional Manager of Sarawak Forestry Corporation Mr. Abang Arabi Abang Aiman.

The event was beautifully organized. Many thanks to those who had worked hard to ensure the success of the event. God bless you all!

Someone obviously dressed inappropriately for the event. Imagine she walked a total of 3km in those heels... Hmmm. Photo by Nad

At one point, I slipped and let out a cry, but managed to hang on to the arms of my fellow bloggers Ladybird and Pei, thank goodness! One of the traffic enforcers nearby was startled by my cry until he also let out a cry and made a spontaneous movement as if he’s catching the fallen me (even though I was quite a distance away)! Melatah rupanya dia… Realizing our silliness, we all laughed at the same time.

Sarawak Forestry Corporation sponsored 60 native Sarawak tree seedlings – Eugenia grandis (ubah laut / bungkang) and Pometia pinnata (Kasai) species. These seedlings were planted at the Piasau Nature Reserve in support of the conservation of this new reserve. Piasau Nature Reserve was gazetted in 2014 with the help from many organizations including petroleum companies.

The soil condition in Piasau Nature Reserve is sandy and porous, therefore it is suitable for those trees. Fruits from Pometia pinnata (Kasai) species is an ideal diet for hornbills and most small mammals. Meanwhile, fruits from Eugenia grandis (ubah laut / bungkang) can be consumed by most birds and small mammals as well.

Sarawak Tourism Board is in total support of this greening effort by encouraging more trees to be planted at the site.

Let’s all do our part in conserving our natural resources, shall we?
