Master Baker Tom Van Syngel came to Miri

KST Bakery Ingredients hosted a baking class recently and invited Belgium Master Baker Tom Van Syngel to demonstrate the making of Brioche, Chocolate Wholemeal, Chocolate and Cranberry Bread, and Walnut Soft Roll.

I found out about the class from a poster they put up on the shop’s door. So, I decided to attend the class with my friend – Elaine Sim, who loves bread and pastry as much as I do.

Master Baker Tom was assisted by Mr. Sunny Koh, who helped to translate class lesson into Bahasa Malaysia, and Mandarin. We understand English well, but not all participants have English as their main language, so to make things clearer, Mr Koh also explained the lesson in Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin.

According to Mr. Sunny Koh (who hails from Sabah), organizers of the class had made an advance booking of one year and a half to request for Master Baker Tom Van Syngel’s presence here. On this particular trip, Master Baker Tom Van Syngel only agreed to do a bread-making demonstration in Miri (out of the many cities in Malaysia) and he rushed to the airport after class has wrapped. For Mirians who didn’t manage to catch him the other day, you might have to wait another year or so to see him again because he is a very busy baker; advance bookings must be made.

Below: After the class has wrapped, some participants rushed to the Chef’s table to grab delicious goodies. The scene reminded me of a frenzied fish market having big sales. Elaine and I waited till the crowd had dispersed to get what was left on the table. There were enough goodies for everyone, of course.
