Never too late to learn music

“But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I’m living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream
I dreamed”

Until the end of 2017, I had never received any formal music education, even though I am very fond of music. I had zero knowledge when it comes to music theory. When I was younger, I didn’t had the chance to study music formally or informally. I dabbled briefly in musical theaters during my younger and slimmer days; my roles were limited to actor and/or dancer, never a singer.

Now that I have free time to spare, I decided to pursue my musical interests. Sometime in November last year, I enrolled myself into a music school to learn music theory. I must be their oldest student, lol. At the same time, I requested the instructor to teach me vocal lessons. My progress has been fine so far and I’m about to start my Grade 3 music theory lessons soon. The pace may be slow, but I think learning music theory and picking up an instrument at a later age is not an impossible task.

Around the same time, I stumbled upon an independent music instructor who had just returned to Miri from his studies in West Malaysia; he graduated from UiTM’s Faculty of Music. He teaches Sape and he also plays the guitar. To date, I am still taking private lessons from him. I am experiencing both formal and non-formal learning in music; it’s pretty exciting. I thoroughly enjoy every lesson and I’m having the time of my life!

If you happen to be in Miri and if you are truly interested to take Sape lessons from my teacher, you may contact him (Garry) at his email: garryeez92(at)gmail(dot)com

He and his buddies also provide group classes in Miri to those who are interested in learning how to play the Sape. For more details, please check out their group official facebook page.

A relative of Garry happens to be a Sape maker and I waited months to have one made for me, because he is a very busy man. He has a day-job and only makes Sape during his free time. The style of my Sape is similar to that of Garry’s. The Sape maker resides quite a distance away from my city, so after he had finished working on my Sape, he and his spouse traveled by car for four hours to deliver the Sape personally to me.

Below: Garry’s Sape color is darker than mine; well, the wood has been exposed to UV over time, giving it an aged look. The picture was taken at Hezekiah Asim’s home and that drawing is one of Hezekiah’s belongings.

Hezekiah turned some space in his home to a mini studio, where some local musicians gather. Sometimes, they park their instruments there as they go travelling.
